Occlusion and ATM

What is Occlusion and the TMJ – Temporomandibular Joint?

Occlusion and TMJ are closely related, as an imbalance in occlusion can affect the function and health of the TMJ.

TMJ occlusion and disorders can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms and oral health problems. Some patients may experience jaw pain, frequent headaches, difficulty opening or closing the mouth, clicking or clicking sounds in the joints, discomfort when chewing, among other symptoms.

These conditions can be the result of misaligned teeth, bruxism (teeth grinding), trauma, bite problems, or excessive muscle tension in the jaw area.

Treatment of occlusion and TMJ aims to restore balance and health to the temporomandibular joint. With a personalized approach, it is possible to relieve pain, restore chewing function and improve the quality of life of patients affected by these conditions. Treatment involves a multidisciplinary approach, with the participation of professionals specialized in occlusion, orthodontics, dental prosthetics, physiotherapy and dentistry in general. The treatment process may vary according to the severity of the condition and the specific needs of the patient. Some common treatment options include orthodontic treatment, physiotherapy and pain therapy and occlusal adjustment.
